Between the Ears 10-11-2023

I haven't ridden in  months due to the heat! This was my first ride since Diamond died.

The weather was beautiful!

It felt really good and I think Fancy enjoyed it to!

I'm hoping to do this a little more often now that the weather is more pleasant.

Have a good one!

And Then There Was One

This is another post I didn't want to write.

I had to put Diamond down Friday September 22nd.

He had an impaction that could not be resolved with tubing and IV fluids. The vet thinks it was due to ingesting too much dirt. It has been so dry. There isn't any grass or weeds. The vet said he has seen several cases this summer. The only option was surgery which really wasn't an option 1) because of his age (22) and 2) it is ridiculously expensive ($10,000)

I took Diamond in last year for the same thing about a year ago. I almost lost him then but he pulled through that time.

I knew something was wrong when I went to feed Thursday morning the 21st. When he didn't eat the grain I gave him I knew something was really wrong. I went on to work and called the vet to see when I could take him in.

I took him in at 11am.  When I went back to get him to take him to the vet he was laying down. Another red flag.

They kept him in the clinic. Thursday night the vet called and said he wasn't doing well and asked for my permission to put him down if he couldn't keep him comfortable through the night. Friday morning his condition remained unchanged.

The vet told me all he had passed was some blood and mucous. Not good news. The vet said he would give him until after lunch and if he still hadn't improved it was decision time.

I went to the clinic just as the staff were going to lunch. I stayed with Diamond until they returned from lunch. I talked to him, loved on him and said my goodbyes. In the hour I was there he laid down 5 times. He was very uncomfortable.

Diamond was a gift from God. You can read that story here

The hardest part for me has been seeing Fancy in the pasture by herself. She did seem to mope for a

couple of weeks. She stood in the barn a lot. She is being in the pasture more and is meeting me at the fence again when I come out.

I am praying about what to do. I'm not quite ready to be done with horses so that will mean getting another horse. Horses are herd animals and they do better if they have a buddy and it doesn't necessarily have to be a horse. However it would be better if it is so someone can ride with me.

I will miss this view.

Thank you Diamond. June 20, 2001- September 22, 2023

Celebrating Korin 09-26-2023

We celebrated Korin turning 9 Tuesday September 26th. Korin asked for all her favorite foods that I make and insisted that I make them! So...I cooked dinner at Vanessa's. The birthday girl requested macaroni & cheese, chicken strips, peas, sliced bread and gravy.

That blue bow on her head is the tule I had tied around her gift.

Uncle Jake (Vanessa's youngest brother) and Aunt Alyssa watching Korin open gifts.

Kennedy, Nana (Jan - Vanessa's stepmom), Doyle at the bar, Grammer, Grandma (Karen - Keannon's mom), Keannon and Vanessa.

Opening our card and gift. We (I) got her a gift card to a local DIY business. Vanessa said she asks to go there all the time.

Kennedy gave her a Stanley Cup with her name on it. As you can see she was pretty excited about that!

Happy Birthday Korin!

Have a good one!

Celebrating Vanessa 09-25-2023

We celebrated Vanessa's 38th birthday at one of her friends and neighbors the Fords. Billy grilled steaks. I, of course made the cake!

Vanessa's friend Halli.

The birthday girl.

Vanessa said she wanted a new study Bible so that's what we got her.

We had a great time.

Have a good one!

Baseball 09-16-2023

Kashton is playing Fall baseball.  He has decided he likes it better than soccer.

He throws left-handed and bats right-handed.

He currently is playing 1st base.

Click on the picture to make it larger. You can see the ball in his glove!

Trying to steal home for a run.

This game got called for lightning. A storm blew up must North of us and stayed North so we didn't get any rain 🙍.

Later that evening when I went to feed the sky showed off.

I like the silhouette of the birds against the fading sunset.

Have a good one.

New Friends?

The morning of September 15th when I came to feed I saw an unusual sight. Canadian Geese eating in the horse pasture! I have seen Canadian Geese but never in my horses' pasture! A few weeks before I saw a handful of deer in the pasture! That was a first also but unfortunately I wasn't able to get a picture of them before the ran off.

I found it interesting that the horses didn't seemed bothered by them until I got there then Fancy thought she should check them out!. Her desire for breakfast was stronger than her curiosity and she followed me to the barn.

When I went to put out hay the geese thought I was too close for comfort and took flight.

It certainly made for an interesting morning!

Have a good one!

Can it Be Fall Already?!

I think of September as being the beginning of fall. The fall equinox is in this month but for the first 10 days our brutal summer did not want to let go.

This was our high temperature September 1st.

It was 100 degrees September 2nd. I just didn't take a screen shot that day.

This was the temperature September 3rd.

September 4th

September 5th

Got this neat picture when I went to feed horses. (9-5)

This is not the sunset. In fact I am facing the East the opposite of the sunset. Isn't this amazing?!

September 6th

September 7th

September 8th

September 9th. The temperature may be under 100 but look at the "feels like temp".

I had a visitor at the barn that night too! My first time to catch a possum trying to eat cat food! I've seen raccoons but never a possum! I put the food up at night for this very reason.

The temps finally dropped into the upper 90's after this streak. I'm so over the heat!

Have a good one!

September 1, 2023

Our last day at Barbara's. We planned to leave after lunch and go by Uncle Jimmy and Aunt Sharon's on our way to Aunt Sandy's. We made plans to have dinner at her house with my cousin Roxanne and husband Pat.

I played the piano at Barbara's several times while there. I actually got to play for Dad when we were there the first week in August. As I was playing I kept seeing the picture of Dad and Barbara on the piano. It looked like he was looking right at me! It was satisfying to me to think he was enjoying my playing.

I learned while there that Roxanne and Pat were in the process of making some major life changes. They sold their house and bought a house in Arizona! They were moving in 2 weeks! I'm so glad we were able to make this connection before they moved!

L to R Doyle, me, Roxanne, Jenny,  Pat and Mom

Doyle took this picture so Aunt Sandy could be in the photo.

Cousins!

Have a good one!
