Dorothy Meets Alice 05.01.2023

Kashton auditioned for a part in a play through the fine arts department at Community Christian School.
The play was called "Dorothy Meets Alice". Kashton got the part as "Scarecrow". A play designed for Junior High, there were not enough kids in Junior High so they went to the lower grades. These kids did a phenomenal job! Below is a video of the entire performance.

Here is the entire cast.

This post was made on Facebook on the school's page

To say I am proud of this group of very young and talented group of actors is an understatement. This OAP has been a journey and sometimes a struggle. I feel these students grew so much and learned a great deal about theatre this year. It was such a privilege and a joy to see them perform yesterday at regionals. To see how each of them have grown and come to better understanding of their characters is just really really fun! 🤩 They gave their absolute best performance at regionals yesterday and it paid off! They placed second and Mrs. Wheaton and I could not be more proud. As a mostly elementary cast going against junior high students, I’d say that is pretty good.
In addition to placing second several students were honored for their individual performances.
Kashton Bailey and Olivia Jefferson received honorable mention cast awards.
Harbor Lemons and Ian Scott received second all star cast awards.
Elli Lemons received a first all star award.
Rhyann Woodarski received an all star tech award. (Shanda Lopez)
And Kyler Glover was honored as best actor for his role as The Mad Hatter!!
Congratulations
to all!
We excelled as a cast and won as a cast!

Kashton in character.

We got to watch the performance on May 1st.

He did a wonderful job as did all the kids. It was a great performance!

Have a good one!

Another Trip to California

Once again Doyle and I went to Northern California for a church conference (April 19-21). Our church is networked with the one in Redding called Bethel. They were hosting a leaders conference. This time was a bit different as our pastors were unable to go. We extended an invite to a young woman in our congregation that I have been mentoring and to Vanessa.

When Doyle had originally invited Vanessa to go, Keannon was insurance adjusting in Redding. However he finished up and was sent to Reno before we got there. It was still close enough for him to drive and meet us in Redding for the week we were there.

The conference didn't start until Wednesday night but we go out on Monday (April 17th) to give us a little time before the conference starts.

We spend nearly all day traveling. It's 2 hours to the airport on our end, 3 1/2 hours in flight, 2 hours from airport to Redding and then add a 2 hour time difference!

Doyle booked us a really nice VRBO for our stay.

April 17th, the day we arrived we had dinner on the Sacramento River in Redding at a place called View 202.

Me and Meagon, the young woman I have been mentoring and disciplining. She is about 4 years younger than Vanessa.

It was chilly there. upper 50's

April 18th was a sightseeing day. We took the kids to a couple of falls that Doyle and I had been to before. First stop was Burney Falls. Burney Falls is a waterfall on Burney Creek, within McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park in Shasta County about 60 miles North of Redding.

View of the falls from the trail.

Vanessa took this awesome photo of Meagon with the falls.

The last time we came to these falls we weren't able to hike the trails that looped the falls as the bridge was out. We got to this time!

That's a big tree!

Me and Meagon at the Falls.

There were benches along the trails. I loved the quotes on them!

Meagon on the bridge crossing Burney Creek.

Keannon got adventuresome.

Meagon and Vanessa.

Keannon and Doyle.

Vanessa taking it all in.

The next falls we went to was Hedge Creek Falls in Dunsmuir. This waterfall is much smaller but is unique in that you can go behind it!

Meagon, Doyle and Keannon behind the waterfall.

Meagon being adventuresome.

Vanessa taking video behind the waterfall.

So beautiful. These pictures were taken on the drive from Burney Falls to Hedge Creek Falls. We were at high elevation at Burney Falls.

Still snow in the mountains.

Disregard the conversation. I was enamored with the fact that it was either snowing or sleeting although the sun was shining! Definitely white stuff flying around!

After all that hiking we had lunch at Yaks on the 5. Doyle and I tried to eat here the last time we came but they were closed. So this was our first time inside too!

Instead of giving you a number for your order they gave you a name. Meagon is holding our order name which was "Dream Girl". Very interesting place!

The food was phenomenal!

We need to hike some more after eating all that food!

It was a great outing for all of us!

Have a good one!

"C" Hits Close to Home

The dreaded "C" word has gotten too close to home. Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer March 6th.

This was a shock and a blow to us as Dad has been very healthy and doing quite well for his "young" 84 years. Walking 3 miles a day and still very active, doing ministry at church, visiting people in the hospital and driving to Texas at Christmas to see us kids.

On February 28th he began his usual 3 mile walk when after completing one mile he was extremely winded. He called his doctor who instructed him to go to the ER. Fluid was discovered on his lung and he was admitted. What he thought would be an overnight stay turned into an 8 day stay. He was diagnosed with stage 4 adenocarcinoma (lung cancer). It is not operable as the tumor is creating the fluid.

Dad was released from the hospital March 8th after he had a biopsy taken of the tumor and an MRI of his brain. He had a PET scan on Friday March 10th.

He met with an oncologist on March 14th where he received the results of the MRI and PET scan which revealed no other cancer! However the tumor he has creates fluid. He had to have it drained off again March 17th

March 21st Dad had an appointment with Lung doctor. I was very grateful that Dad's youngest brother, (my uncle) Alan went with him as Dad does have hearing aids and sometimes doesn't hear everything or hear clearly. The doctor scheduled for a "drain" to be put in the next day so that the fluid could be drained when needed at home. They tried to do it under a local anesthesia and were not successful as it became too painful for Dad. During that procedure he had an air bubble so they kept him overnight to watch to make sure it dissolved.

March 24th Dad had fluid drained again.

Vanessa and I started making plans to go see Dad once he got the diagnosis but were unable to go until the last week in March. We left for Missouri Monday March 27th and drove straight through. We took Mother so she could see family. We met my Aunt Cindy and Uncle Bob at a Truck stop in Wichita where they live and left Mom with them. Mom's baby sister, Sandy, who lives in Missouri drove to Wichita to join them. Vanessa and I continued on to Dad's. We arrived about 5:30pm.

It worked out as Dad had 2 appointments on Tuesday March 28th. One with His oncologist learning more about Dad's diagnosis and plan of treatment. The other one was for a consult to explain the procedure for installing the drain and the port (for chemo treatment). It was a full day and my head hurt from all the information to process.

Wednesday March 29th Dad had the drain and port put in.

Thursday March 30th Dad had his first chemo treatment. Vanessa had to be home by Friday so we took Dad to the cancer center on our way home. We stayed with him through all the explanation about the medicines they would give him and what he possibly would experience. We didn't leave until he completed his first bag of medicine. Karen, (my sister - Barbara's daughter) came not long after we left bringing her mom to be with him and take him home.

The Oncologist says that he was still waiting for genetic markers from his tumor to come back. He told us it can take weeks. He had gotten one of the markers back. What he is looking for is if there are any mutations which as I understand it makes it easier to determine what kind of cancer and what to treat it with. As it stands Dad's tumor has shown no mutations so they are hitting it with the hardest meds. Hopefully the other markers will be in soon and have mutations.

Dad is getting 2 chemos and 1 immunotherapy. The immunotherapy is what it sounds like, it is to help his immune system. He will also get a shot after each treatment to help boost his white blood cell count. Even with that, he will have to be careful.

Honestly, it was really hard to leave him that day. I did fight back tears. Dad has been so active, strong and healthy it grieves me to see this happening to him at his age. I know he has an end. We all do but I do not want it to be like this. However, I am still hopeful and am praying for the miraculous.

These pics were taken on our way to take Dad to the cancer center.

We stopped in Wichita to pickup Mom. We stopped at Bob & Cindy's to eat lunch and visit. (Cindy took the picture)

We made it home about 10:30 pm.

Have a good one!

Baseball 3-23-2023

Kashton is also playing baseball. Here he is playing 2nd base.

Stealing 2nd base.

On third base looking for an opportunity to steal home.

Did you notice that the Jerseys are sponsored by Jesse's Drive-In?

And the opportunity came!

A coach got in front of my line of sight just as I tried to take a picture. It's blurry but he's SAFE! We score!

He looks much older than 10! So cool with his shades.

Have a good one!

My Barn Kitty

I have had several barn cats over the last few years. The show up, stay for a while, then disappear. I try not to get too attached. There are hawks, owls and other predators in that area which probably plays in their disappearance.

I currently have a barn cat that was from a littler last year. I had a female that had 4 babies. They were wild but as I fed them, over time I was able to pet them all. One by one they disappeared. This one has managed to stay alive the longest. It is a female and I call her Casper. I was really surprised when she didn't get pregnant right away. In fact I was convinced she was barren as she is a year old. Then I began to notice her belly growing. I honestly thought she must have a tumor!

Casper meets me every morning when I come to feed, coming to my truck when I park. On the morning of April 2nd she didn't show up. I wondered where she was but wasn't overly concerned as there have been a few times she didn't come in the mornings. When I came to feed that night she was no where to be found either. I was sad. I thought something had happened to her like all the rest.

The next morning Casper meets me at the truck and she's skinny! Oh my goodness, she was pregnant and had babies! I was so excited!

For being a feral cat she, once she learned she could trust me she is extremely lovable.

She kind of likes me! she always wants to lick my nose! And she likes to put her paw on me while I'm petting her. I could probably pick her up but I choose not to.

I think she is very pretty and unusually marked. I love her blue eyes.

I found her babies a few days ago. This picture was taken April 10th. They are just a week old. Looks like there are 4 of them nestled in my hay. I am glad I have hay on the other side of the barn so I won't have to disturb them.

Have a good one!
